February 12, 2022. Everyone’s tongue pronounced these words, “Stay home, stay safe.”

A new study says that come out from home and get some sunlight.

The new study found that Vitamin D is linked to Covid-19 severeness.

A new study from the Azrieli Faculty of Medicine at Bar-Ilan University in Safed, Israel, and the Galilee Medical Center in Nahariya, Israel, reveals a dumfounded link between vitamin D insufficiency and the severity of Covid-19 infection.

In response to the coronavirus pandemic, health officials in Israel and numerous other nations have suggested vitamin D supplementation, however, research on their efficiency has been limited until now. But the new study linked Vitamin D Deficiency (VDD) with Covid-19.

What is the new study on Covid-19 Severity due to Vitamin D deficiency (VDD)?

According to a new study published in the journal PLOS ONE, (On Feb. 3, 2022) those who are vitamin D deficient are more likely to develop a severe or critical case of COVID-19.

When Israeli researchers examined patients who had adequate vitamin D levels before having the disease, with those who did not, they discovered “striking” variations in the likelihood of becoming critically ill from COVID-19.

According to a study published Thursday in the academic journal PLOS One, about half of patients who were vitamin D deficient before getting COVID-19 had a serious sickness, compared to less than 10% of persons who had adequate amounts of the vitamin in their blood.

How did they conduct the study?

The study looked at vitamin D levels in 1,176 individuals admitted to the Galilee Medical Center with a positive PCR test result between April 2020 and February 2021.

The vitamin D levels were determined using testing done before the hospitalization “either as part of a normal blood workup or in response to a clinical suspicion of vitamin D deficiency.” Those lab results had happened between 14 and 730 days before the positive Covid testing.

Patients with vitamin D insufficiency (less than 20 ng/mL) were 14 times more likely to have severe or critical COVID than those with more than 40 ng/mL.

Furthermore, the death rate for patients with adequate vitamin D levels was 2.3 percent, compared to 25.6 percent for patients with insufficient vitamin D levels.

Even after controlling for the patients’ age, gender, and history of chronic conditions, the researchers discovered these Surprising differences.

Furthermore, vitamin D levels were measured before the infection. The study avoids the issue that vitamin deficiency could have been caused by the virus itself.

The research was done during Israel’s first two waves of the virus before vaccines were widely accessible, and doctors emphasized that vitamin supplements were not a replacement for vaccines, but rather a strategy to protect immunity levels from declining.

Although the Israeli study was conducted before Omicron, Dror feels that vitamin D effectiveness would still be seen in Covid Variants.

“What we’re seeing when vitamin D helps people with COVID infections is a result of its effectiveness in bolstering the immune systems to deal with viral pathogens that attack the respiratory system,” he added.

What did the study conclude?

Mentioned in The Times of Israel, Dr. Amiel Dror, a physician and Bar Ilan researcher who led the research team, said, “We found it remarkable, and striking, to see the difference in the chances of becoming a severe patient when you are lacking in vitamin D compared to when you’re not.”

Dror and colleagues examined the data from Israeli patients in greater detail to gain a better understanding of their vitamin D levels before COVID-19 infection.

“We checked a range of timeframes and found that wherever you look over the 2 years before infection, the correlation between vitamin D and disease severity is extremely strong”, Dror told.

Dror added further that, his team’s research demonstrated that the importance of vitamin D was not based on incomplete or faulty data.

People should learn from this that studies pointing to the importance of taking vitamin D are very reliable, and aren’t based on skewed data,”.

“It emphasizes the value of everyone taking a vitamin D supplement during the pandemic, which, consumed in sensible amounts in accordance with official advice, doesn’t have any downside”, he added.

The authors concluded their published report with the following Statement,

“Our study contributes to a continually evolving body of evidence that suggests a patient’s history of vitamin D deficiency is a predictive risk factor associated with poorer COVID-19 clinical disease course and mortality.”

But this does not mean that vaccines are not required. Vaccines have shown great effects on fighting against covid-19 variants. So, you should get vaccinated. Use Vitamin D to boost your immunity.

Vitamin D From Sunlight

Vitamin D has another Name ” Sunshine Vitamin”, According to NIH, Vitamin D is a sunshine vitamin that has been generated for over 500 million years on this planet.

When exposed to UV B radiation, 7-dehydrocholesterol in the skin is transformed to vitamin D3, which is then isomerized into vitamin D3.

When your skin is exposed to sunlight, cholesterol is converted to vitamin D. UVB photons from the sun strike cholesterol in skin cells, giving the energy needed for vitamin D synthesis.

What is the maximum amount of time we should spend in the sun?

Most people can get adequate vitamin D by exposing their forearms, hands, or lower legs to the sun for short amounts of time every day, without using sunscreen.

If you reside in a sunny region, anywhere from the equator to the latitudes of Northern California or Connecticut, 15 minutes of full sun each day will produce 10,000 to 20,000 IU of vitamin D.

The ability of older persons and people with dark skin to synthesize vitamin D from sunshine is limited.
