CHECK YOUR BMI (BODY MASS INDEX)
Body Mass Index (BMI) is calculated by dividing a person’s weight into pounds or kilograms by the square of their height in meters. BMI is a low-cost and simple screening tool for weight categories such as underweight, healthy weight, overweight, and obesity.
Although BMI does not directly measure body fat, it is marginally associated with more direct measures. In addition, BMI appears to be just as closely linked to many metabolic and illness outcomes as these more direct measures of body fatness.
BMI can be used as a screening tool, but it does not make a diagnosis an individual’s body fat mass or health. A healthcare provider will conduct additional evaluation to determine if BMI is a health risk. Skinfold thickness measurements, dietary, physical activity, and family history evaluations are examples of such evaluations.
Since the 1970s, the prevalence of adult BMI greater than or equal to 30 kg/m2 (obesity) has risen dramatically. With the exception of older women, this trend has recently levelled off. Obesity has continued to increase among adult females aged 60 years and over.
Anyone with a BMI between 25 and 29.9 would be categorised as overweight, and anyone with a BMI over 30 would be classified as obese, according to the BMI weight status classifications.
Athletes, on the other hand, may have a high BMI due to increased muscularity rather than body fatness. A person with a high BMI is more likely to have body fatness and be deemed overweight or obese in general, however this may not be the case for athletes. To assess an individual’s health status and risks, a qualified healthcare provider should conduct adequate health evaluations.
Obese people are at a higher risk for a wide range of diseases and health conditions, including the following:
WHAT IS MY HEALTHY WEIGHT?
Healthy nutrition, physical activity, adequate sleep, and stress reduction are all important components of achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. Weight gain might be influenced by a variety of other variables.
A range of healthful foods is included in healthy eating. Fad diets may promise quick results, but they restrict your food intake, might be dangerous, and ultimately fail. Check with your Doctor for a Healthy diet according to your health conditions.
How much physical exercise you require is determined in part by whether you are attempting to maintain or lose weight. Walking is a great method to include extra physical activity into your daily routine.
Weight management is beneficial to your health in the present and in the future. Obese persons, on the other hand, are at higher risk for a wide range of serious diseases and health problems than those who maintain a healthy weight.
