Yay! That’s cool!

Let’s begin this cannabidiol (CBD) 101 by announcing a piece of great news to all the CBD lovers, The House passed the Medical Marijuana Research Act 343-75.

On Monday, April 4, 2022, the United States House of Representatives passed a bipartisan marijuana research bill that would remove barriers to conducting marijuana research and allow scientists to access cannabis from dispensaries in legal cannabis states.

What will the Medical Marijuana Research Act do?

The bill would make it easier for researchers to apply for permission to study cannabis by ensuring a sufficient supply of cannabis for research and requiring federal agencies to consider applications on time.

Furthermore, it would grant scientists access to flowers and other marijuana-related products produced under state-approved marijuana programs and stored in dispensaries.

The vote on the medical marijuana research bill comes after the House passed the Marijuana Opportunity, Reinvestment, and Expungement (MORE) Act on Friday, April 1, which would repeal the federal prohibition on cannabis.

Cannabis research has been limited in the United States for many years, even though several states have legalized cannabis for medical or recreational purposes.

Despite these changes in state policy, as well as the increased numbers of cannabis use and its implications for public health, the federal government has not legalized cannabis on a federal level.

Because cannabis is illegal at the federal level, researchers in the United States who want to conduct studies on the medical benefits and risks of cannabis are prohibited from doing so.

There have been no clinical studies on cannabis products purchased from state-licensed dispensaries.

The majority of research on cannabis’s therapeutic effects has relied on synthetic formulations of specific cannabinoids, such as THC and CBD.

In this CBD 101, I would like to cover all you need to know about CBD oil.

What is CBD Oil?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a chemical found in the Cannabis sativa plant, also known as hemp or cannabis.

Two cannabinoids are receiving a lot of attention, Cannabidiol (CBD). A cannabis compound that is said to have anti-inflammatory and anti-seizure properties. It does not make you feel high.

Cannabis (marijuana), and THC stands for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The compound in cannabis causes you to feel high.

The Cannabis sativa plant contains over 80 chemicals known as cannabinoids. The most well-known component of cannabis is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

CBD, on the other hand, is derived from hemp, a strain of the Cannabis sativa plant that contains only trace amounts of THC. CBD appears to have effects on some brain chemicals, but these are distinct from THC’s effects.

The CBD industry is thriving, with a conservative estimate of $16 to $18billion in the United States by 2025. The plant extract is already being used in cheeseburgers, toothpicks, and breath sprays. More than 60% of CBD users have used it to treat anxiety.

CBD oil is now available in capsules, oil bases for vaporizers, tinctures, edible CBD (CBD gummies), and beauty products like bath bombs and lotions.

CBD cannot be legally included in foods or dietary supplements because it is a prescription drug. CBD can only be found in “cosmetic” products. However, there are CBD products on the market that are labeled as dietary supplements.

Cannabis CBD vs Hemp CBD: What is the difference?

CBD and THC, as well as over 540 additional chemicals, are found in cannabis and hemp plants. The amount of each chemical in the two plants differs greatly.

THC is more prevalent in cannabis, while CBD is less. Hemp has a higher CBD content than cannabis, and it has a lower THC content.

Short History of CBD

Cannabis has a long history that is shrouded in legends and religion. In India, The Vedas, or sacred Hindu texts, contain the earliest mention of cannabis. These writings could have been compiled anywhere between 2000 and 1400 B.C.

The use of the cannabis plant for medicinal purposes dates back to ancient China. Emperor Cheng Neng successfully brewed the first CBD cup of tea in 2737BC.

Cannabis was given a chance in the spotlight before prohibition in 1839. William B. O’Shaughnessy pioneered research into the medicinal value of CBD.

Roger Adams, a Harvard-trained chemist, successfully extracted CBD from cannabis in 1940.

Dr. Raphael Mechoulam dug deeper and discovered the CBD structure. His work earned him the moniker “Godfather of Cannabis Research.” A year later, he succeeded in isolating THC and for the first time defining its structure.

CBD oil in the UK

Earlier this week, the United Kingdom achieved a significant CBD milestone by becoming the first country in the world to regulate the market for safe, orally consumed legal cannabis extracts.

Food Standards Agency identified approximately 3,500 CBD products that passed the initial stages of its assessment, and it advised local authorities to crack down on the many other edible items on store shelves that aren’t on its list.

According to estimates from the Association for the Cannabinoid Industry (ACI), the UK market for consumer CBD products will be worth £690 million in 2021.

This is more than double the level of sales recorded in 2019, when the market was valued at £314 million1, making the UK the world’s second-largest consumer CBD market, with the United States claiming first place.

Products sold north of the border must go through a separate authorization process managed by Food Standards Scotland. Companies in Northern Ireland, on the other hand, must continue to follow EU Novel Food rules and procedures as a result of Brexit protocols.

What are the Health Benefits of CBD oil?

CBD is used for nearly everything nowadays. If you can think of a medical issue, someone is probably using CBD or other cannabis products to treat it.

CBD is a well-established treatment for epilepsy, and preliminary research indicates that it may be beneficial for a variety of anxiety disorders. Let’s check it out one by one.

FDA Approved CBD for the Treatment of Epilepsy

Cannabidiol (Epidiolex), the first FDA-approved CBD-containing drug, was released on the market in 2018 as a prescription drug to treat seizures associated with Lennox Gastaut syndrome (LGS), Dravet syndrome (DS), or tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) in people aged one year and older.

The FDA approved the treatment for patients as young as two years old. In studies, it was found to be more effective than a placebo in reducing the frequency of seizures.

Lennox-Gastaut syndrome is diagnosed between the ages of three and five and lasts into adulthood. It is characterized by a variety of seizures, the most common of which are tonic seizures. CBD is used as an adjuvant therapy to various anti-epileptic drugs used in first-line treatment. Learning and intellectual disabilities are common in children with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.

Dravet syndrome is a diagnosis made around the age of one in children who have frequent febrile seizures. Other seizures, including status epilepticus, may occur during the course of the disease.

Dravet syndrome appears to be caused by a nonsense mutation in the SCN1A gene, though there have been cases where this mutation has not been found. To prevent the development of status epilepticus, benzodiazepines and anti-epileptics were prescribed as symptomatic treatment.

Dravet syndrome children frequently have motor, intellectual, and psychological disabilities.

CBD oil for Anxiety

CBD oil has shown promise in treating some mental illnesses, such as anxiety disorders, which has piqued the interest of many people who suffer from these conditions.

In a Brazilian study, 57 men were given either oral CBD or a placebo 90 minutes before a simulated public speaking test. The researchers discovered that a 300-mg CBD dose was the most effective at significantly reducing anxiety during the test.

Though more research is needed, a 2015 medical journal review article looked at CBD and its effect on a variety of anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, seasonal affective disorder, panic disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

CBD Oil relieves pain

Scientists have recently discovered that certain components of cannabis, including CBD, are responsible for its pain-relieving properties.

CBD has been shown in studies to help reduce chronic pain by influencing endocannabinoid receptor activity, decreasing inflammation, and interacting with neurotransmitters.

Some research suggests that when used alone, CBD may be effective for certain types of pain, such as nerve pain and back pain. It appears to be most effective when combined with THC.

CBD Oil for Nausea due to Cancer Chemotherapy

The FDA has approved Marinol and Syndros, which contain dronabinol (synthetic THC), as well as Cesamet, which contains nabilone (a synthetic substance similar to THC). Dronabinol and nabilone are anti-nausea and anti-vomiting medications used to treat nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy. Dronabinol is also used to treat HIV/AIDS-related appetite loss and weight loss.

CBD Oil for HIV/AIDS-related Weight loss

People living with HIV/AIDS may experience unintentional weight loss. The FDA approved the cannabinoid dronabinol in 1992 for the treatment of loss of appetite associated with weight loss in HIV/AIDS patients. This approval was based primarily on a 139-person study that examined the effects of dronabinol on appetite and weight changes.

CBD Oil to treat MS Spasticity

Several cannabis/cannabinoid preparations, including dronabinol, nabilone, cannabis extract, nabiximols (brand name Sativex; a mouth spray containing THC and CBD that is approved in more than 25 countries outside the United States), and smoked cannabis, have been studied for multiple sclerosis symptoms.

A 2010 meta-analysis of three studies (666 participants) of nabiximols in people with multiple sclerosis and spasticity discovered that nabiximols reduced subjective spasticity, usually within three weeks, and that roughly one-third of people given nabiximols in addition to other treatments experienced at least a 30% improvement in spasticity. Nabiximols appeared to be relatively risk-free.

CBD Oil for the Treatment of Opioid Addiction

Some studies, both preclinical animal and human clinical trials, suggest that CBD could be used to help treat opioid addiction.

In one such study, researchers gave CBD to people who had a heroin use disorder. CBD significantly reduced heroin users’ cue-induced cravings, withdrawal anxiety, resting heart rate, and salivary cortisol levels over the course of a week. There were no serious side effects discovered.
